5 Things You Can Do Today to Know Yourself
You do not know yourself. What you have in your mind is just an image that you have made for yourself in the past. Often, you end up underestimating your capabilities because you have failed a few times.
Five years ago, I was used to being the center of attraction. I didn’t know of any other way of living than being an essential part of everyone’s life. I was young; I was in school. And that was my world. A small world where there were only about 4000 people. It was reasonably easy to identify everything that I was good at and not.
Little did I know, that this dream that I had been living for the first 15 years of my life would pop like a balloon pricked with a nail. As soon as school became history, my being turned into the mystery, and suddenly I could feel this new emotion called misery.
Time passed, and my world kept getting bigger and bigger and this horrible realization dawned on me. I was no longer that important. ‘Maroon 5’ framed it perfectly — “Just a speck of dust within the galaxy.” That’s what I was. That’s what everyone told me.
Most of us spend our entire lives living that life. Being mere reflections of everyone else’s opinions.
Here are five things you can do today to realize your real potential:
Meditate
One of the most important things that I have incorporated into my life because of which I have been able to figure myself out.
Meditation is not just about sitting in a corner and focusing on a dot. It is being immersed in the current moment.
Just focus on eating while you are sitting on the dining table. Get your mind used to being in a constant state of focus. It will not only help you do your everyday tasks better but also make you a more productive person in general.
Travel
Nothing is more eye-opening than traveling.
Visiting new places and meeting new people allows you to encounter various situations and figure out your personality.
Try not to travel like a tourist who visits only the famous destinations of a city/town. Hang out with the locals, eat their cuisine, walk their walk and talk their talk.
Get out of your comfort zone
You cannot live the old life and expect new results.
One needs to go out of his/her comfort zone to figure out what he indeed is. Take a different route to work or eat at a different restaurant. Take a different person out for lunch or try a new genre of music. Changes stimulate the mind and stimulation lead to realization.
Stop worrying about the past and the future
We tend to spend most of our lives reminiscing the past and worrying about the future.
The longer you live in any place apart from your present, the further you are going away from your true self.
Our mind is like a child. It is fragile and foolish. It tends to think that every thought is a reality. So, make sure you feed it with ideas that are constructive.
Stop Lying
Try always to speak the truth.
Lying depletes your self-confidence and makes you a hollower person.
On the other hand, the truth sets you free and enables you to be confident in all situations.
Always remember — No one can be a better version of you than you yourself.
